GNPS in the Atlanta BeltLine Arboretum

In 2014, Trees Atlanta offered GNPS the stewardship of a small area in the Atlanta BeltLine Arboretum, near the Freedom Parkway connector trail. Trees Atlanta already maintains the linear greenspace along the multi-use Eastside Trail, and GNPS is honored to work with this important Atlanta organization. The wooded plot, a little more than a half-acre in size, is not far from the intersection of Elizabeth Street and N. Highland Avenue in Inman Park. The location is fronted by an interesting circle of granite stones that are surrounded by another circle of beech trees planted by Trees Atlanta.

GNPS will remove invasive plants from the site and enrich this wooded fragment with Georgia native plantings that will thrive on the south-facing slope. During ongoing workdays, GNPS volunteers will remove invasive plants such as ivy, liriope, privet, cherry laurel, and honeysuckle bushes. Kudzu vines were found on the site and will offer an ongoing challenge during future workdays.

A landscape architect familiar with the mission of GNPS will create a planting plan for the location. The initial planting days will be held in fall of 2015, and ongoing maintenance and further plantings will continue over the next several years. Low maintenance trees, shrubs and perennials will enhance the area for the many walkers and bikers who use the trail and educate them about the beauty of native plants.
