Berkeley Lake is home to Susan Hanson, who has taken nearly an acre and transformed it into a native plant botanical garden. With a backbone of mature trees, she has added an amazing amount of understory plantings. Some of the plants are native azaleas (Rhododendron), sweet shrub (Calycanthus floridus), and cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis). A sun garden in the front is landscaped with goldenrod (Solidago), mountain mint (Pycnanthemum) and many more bee loving plants. Susan acquired many of her plants from other GNPS members who shared plants from their own yards. She also supports the annual GNPS plant sales. Congratulations, Susan, for receiving the Gold Native Plant Habitat Certification!
