Today (June 11) we removed English ivy (Hedera helix) from the slope above the first leg of trail; and along the boardwalk we cut down large privet shrubs (Ligustrum sinense), some as big as 10-12” in diameter, and took them to the dumpster. We thinned the butterfly garden, and trimmed back branches of a big mulberry tree (Morus rubra) that were overhanging it, to let it get more light.
the weather was fine and sunny, in the 80’s, and quite pleasant under the tree canopy. The tree canopy is fully leafed out and many species have already finished flowering; while other, late-blooming species have not quite yet geared up to bloom. The plants in the new butterfly garden all appear to be doing well. The restoration of the boardwalk (done by Cobb County parks dept.) is completed and looks good (they are still working on bridges over culverts farther down the trail towards the mill ruins). Our regular activity of privet cutting and to either side of it was therefore able to continue without a change of plan.
