Monarch migration, parasitism and conservation

This talk will focus on explaining basic monarch biology, life cycle and migration. Important biological aspects of the most studied disease in monarchs and details of the citizen science project that the Altizer laboratory at the University of Georgia (UGA) has been working on will be explained.  Dr. Barriga will show general current findings of their research in monarch disease and will explain the current project they are working on using museum collections of 43 butterfly species that are related to monarchs.

Paola A. Barriga holds a Ph.D. in Biology from the Univ. of Arkansas.  She has spent many years researching with the Yasuni National Park in Ecuador and has attained numerous fellowships, grants, scholarships, and awards throughout her career.  She currently is a post-doctoral researcher in the Odum School of Ecology at the University of Georgia and presents community outreach projects on butterflies, amphibians, and reptiles.
