Dr. Jaap de Roode, professor of biology at Emory University in Atlanta, will discuss his research into how animals discover and use medicine in nature—primarily with plants! His book, Doctors By Nature explores the fascinating relationship of monarch butterflies and different types of milkweeds and many other examples. In fact, ages before the dawn of modern medicine, wild animals were harnessing the power of nature’s pharmacy to heal themselves. A key focus of Dr. De Roode’s work is the study of monarch butterflies, but he also teaches biology, and trains graduate students in infectious disease biology. He is on the board of directors of the Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail whose aim is to recreate pollinator habitat across the country.
