Field Trip: Shirley Miller Wildflower Trail and Rocktown

March 30, 2019 @ 9:30 am - 2:00 pm

The first portion of this trip will explore the beautiful spring ephemeral wildflowers along the boardwalk trail of the Shirley Miller Wildflower Trail, a calcareous cove environment. The second portion will explore the drier, more acidic conditions of the rocky outcrops of Rock City on Pigeon Mountain. The boardwalk portion of the field trip is easy for everybody; the second portion involves a steeper hike that some participants may skip if they prefer. On the way out of Rocktown, after 2pm, those who wish to may join Troy at the Lost Wall Trail to look for a couple small animals unique to the area: the endangered Pigeon Mountain Salamander (Plethodon petraeus), and lampshade spiders (Hypochilus sp.), the most primitive spider to use a web to catch prey. GPS coordinates for the two trailheads:

What to bring:

  1. A Georgia Lands Pass – Purchase either the full-year Lands Pass ($32.50 after processing fee), a full-year Combo Hunting/Fishing license (also $32.50), or the one-day Fishing/Hunting Pass ($7.50 after fee) here: https://license.gooutdoorsgeorgia.com. Be sure to print out the pass and bring it with you. If you do the one-day pass, be sure you select the correct date: Saturday, March 30th. At least one other field trip this year will require the same pass, so it may be worth the cost of buying the full-year version.
  2. Anything else you want – camera, guide books, etc. I don’t expect mosquitoes or sun exposure to be major issues on this trip.
  3. If you wish to join Troy on the Lost Wall Trail after Rocktown, bring a flashlight or headlamp.
