Trip description:  Here is a rare opportunity to see one of the finest examples of a granite rock outcrop in Georgia. Heggie’s Rock was protected in 1983 by The Nature Conservancy, and remains one of the most pristine and diverse of Piedmont granitic outcrops. It hosts many rare plants, including federally endangered Isoetes tegetiformans (mat-forming quillwort), federally threatened Gratiola amphiantha (pool sprite), Draba aprica (granite whitlow-grass) and Sedum pusillum (dwarf granite orpine), all of which are best viewed in spring (though we will look for what remains of them in fall). The plant communities in dish gardens throughout the preserve are diverse, and the site is exceptionally beautiful in fall with its display of Helianthus porteri (granite daisy).

Bring:  camera, bug spray, sunscreen, water, snacks and/or lunch

Trip difficulty: You MUST be in good physical shape. This preserve is not ADA accessible: no wheel chairs, walkers, canes, breathing apparatuses, etc. are allowed. Do you have any problems that limit your walking? This may include feet, legs, knees, hip, back, and any respiratory conditions.

Directions:  We will meet along Louisville Road, park there, and walk in to the preserve. You will be given specific directions after you have registered.

For Georgia Native Plant Society Members only.
Registration required: To register for this member-only event, go to https://gnps.z2systems.com/np/clients/gnps/event.jsp?event=91& .
