Medicinal Native Plants of the Southeast – West Georgia Chapter

June 20, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Did you know that you are living in one of nature’s medicine cabinets? The Southern Appalachians and Piedmont regions are home to a great diversity of medicinal plants used by cultures throughout history and still valued by modern herbalists today. At our June 20 chapter meeting, Melissa Ray will teach us about some of the most important native herbs, their uses and growing habits, and the history of herbalism in our unique landscape. She will also talk about common herbal preparations that you can make at home.

To allow enough time for this important topic, the reception will begin early at 6:00 PM followed by the presentation from 6:30 to 8:00.

Presenter Bio:  Melissa Ray is the Research Coordinator in the UGA Social Sustainability of Agriculture and Food Systems Lab. She completed her M.S. at UGA’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources with a focus in human dimensions and environmental education and served as the Graduate Assistant to the UGA Sustainability Certificate program. Melissa also received her B.A. in Environmental Science and Anthropology at Emory University. Her interest in medicinal plants began with a week-long program at the John C. Campbell Folk School, which led her to pursue a Certificate in Herbalism from the Botanologos School of Herbal Studies with Patricia Kyritsi Howell. She is also a newly appointed mama to her son, Jules, who waves ‘hello’ to ants and would rather live outside than in.
