DESCRIPTION:Every Tuesday morning\, weather permitting\, there is a work session at the Buffalo Creek Trail in Carrollton. Volunteers are needed to help maintain the native plantings and the walking trails and to remove invasive plants. Everyone is welcome\, but please do not bring young children for safety reasons. Park at the Greenbelt parking area located at 515 Old Newnan Rd and walk down the hill\, and the trail will be on your left. Please enter your start and stop times on the sign-in sheet that’s posted on the back of the kiosk next to the Buffalo Creek Outdoor Education Center sign. Bring work gloves and drinking water and wear sturdy shoes. Insect repellant is strongly recommended during the warm months. If the weather is questionable\, please check our Facebook page for updates.

SUMMARY:How to Look at Lichens
DESCRIPTION:This program will start with the basics of what lichens are and how they live. Our expert speaker\, Malcolm Hodges\, will talk about how to tell them apart based on how they reproduce\, where they live\, and what they grow on. He will also touch on their importance in ecosystems\, how to learn more about Georgia’s lichens\, and how to observe them using the iNaturalist app. \nMalcolm Hodges holds a BA in Biology from Rice University and a Masters in Zoology from Mississippi State. Now retired\, he was Director of Stewardship for The Nature Conservancy in Georgia\, serving as a biologist and land manager for the nonprofit\, 1992-2020. His work mainly involved managing the Conservancy’s nature preserves\, which ran the gamut from biological monitoring to fire management to public outreach. His interests and areas of expertise are conservation management of threatened biota in the Southeast US; lichen systematics\, distribution\, and conservation in the Southeast; and ornithology. Hodges worked with mentor Sean Beeching and others on the Georgia Lichen Atlas Project\, which documented\, described\, and mapped lichen species across the state. \nThere will be a reception with light refreshments at 6:30\, followed by the program at 7:00 and a drawing for door prizes at the conclusion. \nMalcolm Hodges

DESCRIPTION:Every Tuesday morning\, weather permitting\, there is a work session at the Buffalo Creek Trail in Carrollton. Volunteers are needed to help maintain the native plantings and the walking trails and to remove invasive plants. Everyone is welcome\, but please do not bring young children for safety reasons. Park at the Greenbelt parking area located at 515 Old Newnan Rd and walk down the hill\, and the trail will be on your left. Please enter your start and stop times on the sign-in sheet that’s posted on the back of the kiosk next to the Buffalo Creek Outdoor Education Center sign. Bring work gloves and drinking water and wear sturdy shoes. Insect repellant is strongly recommended during the warm months. DESCRIPTION:Georgia’s ecoregions\, including the Piedmont\, are also its geologic subdivisions. Within the Piedmont\, a spectrum of rock types from quartzite to amphibolite both influence topography and determine a spectrum of soil chemistry from acidic sandy soil to “sweet” calcium and magnesium-rich soil. In an update of several presentations that he gave with the late GNPS Director of Education Dr. Leslie Edwards\, Roadside Geology of Georgia co-author Dr. Bill Witherspoon tells how a billion years of shifting continents and seafloor helped determine the habitat for that rare plant you love.  He also shows how to use apps such as Rockd and the Web Soil Survey to learn about the potential of its flourishing in a specific site. \nSpeaker: Dr. Bill Witherspoon \nBio: As co-author of Roadside Geology of Georgia (2013)\, now in the hands of more than 10\,000 readers\, Dr. Witherspoon has given more than 200 walks\, slideshows\, and workshops connecting geology to many topics. DESCRIPTION:Fall is the best time to plant\, and the West Georgia Chapter’s Fall Plant Sale brings together at least half a dozen native plant vendors\, including large and small commercial nurseries and backyard growers.  You can expect a a wide selection of plants\, including wildflowers\, ground covers\, vines\, shrubs\, and trees\, for all types of growing conditions.  The Carroll County Agricultural Center offers restrooms and plenty of parking.  Park in the rear of the building and follow the signs to the entrance.  The front door of the Ag Center will not be used as an entrance or exit during this event. \nPlease pay each vendor for their plants before you leave the vendor’s booth.  Most vendors accept credit cards.  Once you’ve paid\, you can park your plants in our holding area\, where volunteers will watch them while you continue to shop.  We do not provide wagons or carts\, but you’re welcome to bring your own. \nDoors open promptly at 9 am.  Until that time\, no one will be admitted except vendors and workers. \nPreparing for the 2025 Fall Plant Sale
