SUMMARY:Weed Wrangle at Rose Hill Cemetery (Macon)
DESCRIPTION:Team up with Fringed Campion Chapter members and friends for a Weed Wrangle at Rose Hill Cemetery at 10 am on February 3\, 2024.  Volunteers will meet at the Oak Ridge Cemetery entry gate\, which is a block or two north of the main entrance to Rose Hill Cemetery.  We will remove non-native invasive plant species (English ivy\, privet\, mimosa\, Bradford pear\, Chinese tallow\, paper mulberry) from this historic cemetery. \nDress for garden work (long pants\, long sleeves\, gloves\, hat\, boots)\, bring a water bottle and any tools you have to cut or lop undesirable woody and herbaceous plants. Participants must be 12 years or older\, participants under 18 must have an adult participating\, and all participants must sign the GNPS waiver of liability before working. Please bring pruners or loppers if you have them\, as we will probably not have enough to loan to everyone who volunteers. \nCheck the event page on Facebook for any last minute updates: https://www.facebook.com/events/383555717395957

SUMMARY:Stone Mountain Propagation Project Workday
DESCRIPTION:The Stone Mountain Propagation Project (SMPP) workdays are a weekly educational opportunity to learn about native plants and contribute to conservation efforts. Most plants grown by SMPP will find their home in land restoration projects or educational gardens. The propagation effort goes on all year long\, and its success depends on regular volunteers. Please consider spending a few hours with us each month. Our propagation area is inside Stone Mountain Park\, but gate fees are waived on the workdays for propagation workers. \nIf this will be your first time at a GNPS propagation workday\, write to us at smpp_admin@gnps.org at least three days in advance to receive directions and let us know you are coming out to help. This allows us to plan to orient new folks and to ensure you have a great first time at SMPP. If you decide to volunteer with us regularly\, we will put you on an email reminder list that goes out in advance of each week’s workday. We do request that people sign up to attend each week as it helps us plan work based on how many people we expect to attend. Thank you for understanding! \n

SUMMARY:2024 Symposium: DIY Native Habitats - Building Your Stewardship Toolkit
DESCRIPTION:The focus of our 29th Native Plant Symposium is DIY Native Habitats – Building Your Stewardship Toolkit. Our suite of talks will focus on getting the right plants into your garden to support your local ecosystem. This is includes guidance on how to research them\, how to identify what you already have\, understanding your plant community\, and considerations for local habitat restoration. \nOur speakers will help you build a toolkit of purposeful choices and tools that help you at home\, in designed landscapes\, and when restoring habitat in the wild. Researching appropriate native plants and choosing to incorporate a major of native plants in our properties and projects makes a difference to the other inhabitants of our ecosystems: birds\, butterflies\, and bees. \nSpecialist butterflies\, moths\, and bees need native plants. Native plants are the first trophic layer to convert sunlight into food for insects\, helping to ensure that those insects thrive. Bird populations rely on abundant insect life to sustain their populations. Our purposeful selection of plants makes a difference to these creatures. \nOn Day 2\, we will also take some time to highlight the activities of our chapters. Our chapters are the boots on the ground folks that bring activities closer to and more regionally meaningful for our members. \nRegistration and schedule information is on the symposium page.
