DESCRIPTION:Habitat restoration work continues at Heritage Park in central Cobb County with tasks including invasive removal\, native plantings\, and garden maintenance. Wear clothing appropriate to the weather and uneven terrain; be sure your footwear is closed-toe. Bring work gloves and hand tools such as pruning saw\, shears\, shovel\, pick\, etc.\, if you have them; if not that’s OK. Water will be provided or bring your own drinks. Gnats and/or yellow jackets may be present. \nWorkdays normally run from 9:00-11:00 a.m. in warm months (May-September)\, and 10:00-noon in cooler months. DESCRIPTION:Every Tuesday morning\, weather permitting\, there is a work session at the Buffalo Creek Trail in Carrollton. Volunteers are needed to help maintain the native plantings and the walking trails and to remove invasive plants. Everyone is welcome\, but please do not bring young children for safety reasons. Park at the Greenbelt parking area located at 515 Old Newnan Rd and walk down the hill\, and the trail will be on your left. Please enter your start and stop times on the sign-in sheet that’s posted on the back of the kiosk next to the Buffalo Creek Outdoor Education Center sign. Bring work gloves and drinking water and wear sturdy shoes. Insect repellant is strongly recommended during the warm months. If the weather is questionable\, please check our Facebook page for updates.

DESCRIPTION:Join the West Georgia Chapter of GNPS for a plant BioBlitz at the SUSTAIN. property in Bowdon GA\, about 12 miles west of Carrollton.  A BioBlitz is an organized effort to identify as many species as possible within a target area.  During a 2-hour event at this property in May\, volunteers identified 58 native plant species.  We’re returning in August to look for species we missed the first time around. \nYou don’t have to be a plant identification expert to participate\, and you can use your favorite plant ID app or field guide. SUMMARY:How to Look at Lichens
DESCRIPTION:This program will start with the basics of what lichens are and how they live. Our expert speaker\, Malcolm Hodges\, will talk about how to tell them apart based on how they reproduce\, where they live\, and what they grow on. He will also touch on their importance in ecosystems\, how to learn more about Georgia’s lichens\, and how to observe them using the iNaturalist app. \nMalcolm Hodges holds a BA in Biology from Rice University and a Masters in Zoology from Mississippi State. Now retired\, he was Director of Stewardship for The Nature Conservancy in Georgia\, serving as a biologist and land manager for the nonprofit\, 1992-2020. His work mainly involved managing the Conservancy’s nature preserves\, which ran the gamut from biological monitoring to fire management to public outreach. His interests and areas of expertise are conservation management of threatened biota in the Southeast US; lichen systematics\, distribution\, and conservation in the Southeast; and ornithology. Hodges worked with mentor Sean Beeching and others on the Georgia Lichen Atlas Project\, which documented\, described\, and mapped lichen species across the state. \nThere will be a reception with light refreshments at 6:30\, followed by the program at 7:00 and a drawing for door prizes at the conclusion. \nMalcolm Hodges

DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will engage in a rewarding morning of invasive plant removal in W.D. Thomson Park in Atlanta near Emory. There will be tasks for all ages and levels of experience. Wear closed toe shoes\, long sleeves and pants as there may be poison ivy. Dress for the weather and uneven terrain. If you have your own gloves and tools\, bring them along; otherwise you may borrow some of ours.\n \nMeet in the lower parking lot at 9 am. Only stay as long as you like; every bit helps! SUMMARY:Buffalo Creek Work Day
DESCRIPTION:Every Tuesday morning\, weather permitting\, there is a work session at the Buffalo Creek Trail in Carrollton. Volunteers are needed to help maintain the native plantings and the walking trails and to remove invasive plants. Everyone is welcome\, but please do not bring young children for safety reasons. Park at the Greenbelt parking area located at 515 Old Newnan Rd and walk down the hill\, and the trail will be on your left. Please enter your start and stop times on the sign-in sheet that’s posted on the back of the kiosk next to the Buffalo Creek Outdoor Education Center sign. Bring work gloves and drinking water and wear sturdy shoes. Insect repellant is strongly recommended during the warm months.
