SUMMARY:Exploring Georgia's Native Plants: Native Plants (Still) Rock in the Piedmont!
DESCRIPTION:Georgia’s ecoregions\, including the Piedmont\, are also its geologic subdivisions. Within the Piedmont\, a spectrum of rock types from quartzite to amphibolite both influence topography and determine a spectrum of soil chemistry from acidic sandy soil to “sweet” calcium and magnesium-rich soil. In an update of several presentations that he gave with the late GNPS Director of Education Dr. Leslie Edwards\, Roadside Geology of Georgia co-author Dr. Bill Witherspoon tells how a billion years of shifting continents and seafloor helped determine the habitat for that rare plant you love.  He also shows how to use apps such as Rockd and the Web Soil Survey to learn about the potential of its flourishing in a specific site. \nSpeaker: Dr. Bill Witherspoon \nBio: As co-author of Roadside Geology of Georgia (2013)\, now in the hands of more than 10\,000 readers\, Dr. Witherspoon has given more than 200 walks\, slideshows\, and workshops connecting geology to many topics. SUMMARY:Georgia's Prehistoric Native Plants: Our 300-million-year-old Garden
DESCRIPTION:More than 300 million years ago\, the land that was to become Georgia was forested by huge but strange trees and plants that thrived in swamps near ancient coastlines. There were no flowering plants or grasses\, but instead there were ferns and related flora that later formed the coal beds mined throughout the Appalachians. Fossil evidence of these plants is found in the coal mine dumps\, and their descendants sometimes grow near their fossilized ancestors. This program will cover the geology\, paleo-climate\, and diversity of Georgia’s ancient native plants. \nSpeaker: Jose Santamaria served as Executive Director of Tellus Science Museum from 1996 through 2023 and remained involved with the museum’s exhibit and expansion projects until his retirement in 2025. He now serves as Executive Director Emeritus and volunteers with the museum’s mineral and fossil collection. Jose is the editor of Minerals of Georgia (2016) and has published articles and papers on minerals and fossils. He currently serves as Vice President of the Rome Mineral Society and Co-Chair of the Georgia Mineral Society Micromount Section. \nRegister for this event
