SUMMARY:Blood\, Sweat\, but No Tears: Life Lessons Learned While Creating a Piedmont Prairie
DESCRIPTION:Location: Sandy Creek Nature Center\n  \nSandy Creek Nature Center is a wonderful resource in Athens. One feature is the Piedmont Prairie restoration that was installed just north of the parking lot of the Nature Center. Kate has invested the effort to create and manage this excellent resource\, which is used as an educational area as well as a habitat for native wildlife species. This presentation will be inside initially and will include an in-person tour of the prairie after Kate’s talk.\n  \nKate Mowbray is a Naturalist at Sandy Creek Nature Center. She enjoys sharing her love of nature with others and getting a chance to learn from other great naturalists in the community. When not in front of a group visiting SCNC\, you can find her listening for frogs\, inspecting anything that moves\, and strolling through nature enjoying the sunshine.\n  \nThis event is free and open to the public regardless of whether you are or are not a member of the Athens-East Piedmont Chapter of the GNPS.\n  \nWant to let us know that you’re coming? SUMMARY:Athens-East Piedmont Chapter October Meeting - Warm Season Grasses
DESCRIPTION:Athens-East Piedmont Chapter October Meeting\nGardening with Native Warm Season Grasses\nGrasses rule the world! With more than 10\,000 species\, grasses are found on every continent\, including Antarctica. Yet most of us know only a few\, if any\, of our native grass species. Yes\, grasses are hard! It’s true; they pretty much all look alike and they have tiny flower parts. But it’s fairly easy to recognize the 10 or 15 of the most common grass species in the Georgia Piedmont. Linda will share some identification tips for identifying the common grasses that flower and fruit in the late summer and early fall around Athens. \nLinda Chafin retired in 2020 from the State Botanical Garden where she was a Conservation Botanist for 16 years. She is the author of “Field Guide to the Rare Plants of Georgia” and “Field Guide to the Wildflowers of Georgia and Surrounding States.” She teaches plant identification courses\, including one about native warm-season grasses\, for the Certificate in Native Plants program and other venues. \nThis event is free and open to the public regardless of whether you are or are not a member of the Athens-East Piedmont Chapter of the GNPS. We are able to meet for free at Sandy Creek Nature Center in exchange for volunteering for the Athens-Clarke County Office of Sustainability. Please look for opportunities here and in our future chapter newsletters. \nPlant/seed swap following the meeting:\nWe will be holding a plant and seed swap after the meeting. Please leave any plants you bring in your car and don’t bring them into the building. \nWe look forward to seeing you there! \n———————– \nNOTE: \n\nWe usually meet on the second week of the month\, but some conflicts have required us to move this meeting to the third week of October.\nWe reserve our venues for 1/2 hour before and after the meeting time. You are welcome to come early and stay late to socialize. Your help with set up and break down of the room would also be welcome.\nOur meeting will be held inside of the Sandy Creek Nature Center outside of their normal business hours.

SUMMARY:Chapter Meeting: Athens-East Piedmont Chapter August Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Athens-East Piedmont August Chapter Meeting\nJoin us for our August Chapter Meeting\, which will include a business meeting as well as a presentation by Connie Gray on Native Ferns of the Georgia Piedmont. This presentation will cover the 20 or so most common native fern species found in the Piedmont region. Fern identification can be intimidating but there are ways to make it easier. We’ll look at the distinguishing characteristics to look for\, key ID features for each species\, and the habitats where they are usually found. If there’s time\, we may take a short walk to see some of these ferns in their natural habitats at the Center. \nOur meeting will be held inside of the Sandy Creek Nature Center outside of their normal business hours.
