Michael Cowan was awarded a silver level certification for changing his suburban lot from an exotic landscape to natural looking areas with plants native to Georgia. The perennials include wrinkle-leaf goldenrod (Solidago rugosa), bee balm (Monarda fistulosa), and butterfly weed (Asclepias tubersosa). Wild strawberry (Fragaria virginiana) and Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) make excellent groundcovers on his property. Several vines include passionflower (Passiflora incarnata), climbing hydrangea (Decumaria barbara), and crossvine (Bignonia capreolata). Many mature trees provide shade in the back of the house while the understory consists of Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis), sweetshrub (Calycanthus floridus), fringe tree (Chionanthus virginicus) and many more small trees, shrubs and ferns.
