Mary Alice Applegate’s residential property in Tifton was recognized at the silver level of GNPS Native Plant Habitat certification. Several years ago, when Mary Alice moved onto the site, the garden consisted almost entirely of non-native plants and lawn. She has worked diligently removing exotic invasive plants, replacing non-native landscaping plants with native plants, and converting lawn to garden. She has incorporated a wide diversity of plants – trees, shrubs, grasses, perennials and vines – that attract pollinators and birds throughout the year. Every season, as she continues this process, her native garden is expanding, and she can see the results in increasing numbers of pollinators in her garden.
