There’s a lot more going on in Kimberly Dejanovich’s Silver-certified habitat than milkweed, but multiple species of the plant are the attraction for all the many monarch butterflies that visit. Situated in a community with HOA restrictions, the front yard fits in with the neighbors. Only the yaupon holly and muhly grass hint at the native plants that lie beyond, at least until one notices the expansive rose mallow along the side of the house. A portion of the back wall of the house is essentially devoted to being a monarch nursery. The large back yard has been transformed from a nearly barren landscape in 2016 to a diverse community of plants, with sunny perennials (including more rose mallow and milkweed) lining one side. Toward the back and the other side, visitors are welcomed by a well-manicured woodland with creative drainage and hardscaping. Even maligned natives like pokeweed and lamb’s quarters find a place here, and look great doing it!
