Athens-East Piedmont Chapter November Meeting

Gardening with ‘Less than Common’ Native Plants: Ethics, Responsibilities, and Considerations

Botanist and Chapter member Mincy Moffett will share a program about using uncommon native plants in our gardens. Mincy is a Listing and Recovery Biologist for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service in the Georgia Ecological Services Field Office in Athens. He holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of the South (Sewanee), an M.B.A. from Georgia State University, and a Ph.D. in Plant Biology from Auburn University.  He had an early career in banking and later helped steer the international environmental group, Greenpeace, as Administrative Director before transitioning to science and conservation. He is retired from the Wildlife Conservation Section of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources having served as a Rare Species Botanist for 16 years. He is actively involved as a member of the senior leadership of the Georgia Plant Conservation Alliance (GPCA) and is the GPCA conservation-lead for a dozen species. He serves on the leadership team of the Southeastern Plant Conservation Alliance and the Conservation Committee of the Georgia Native Plant Society. Mincy volunteers his time establishing and maintaining Connect-to-Protect pollinator gardens for county parks and schools, as well as teaching in the STEM Lab of his local elementary school in Oconee County, GA.

This event is free and open to the public regardless of whether you are or are not a member of the Athens-East Piedmont Chapter of the GNPS.

Plant/seed swap following the meeting:
We will be holding a plant and seed swap after the meeting. Please leave any plants you bring in your car and do not bring them into the building.

NOTE:

  • In exchange for allowing groups to use the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Athens’ meeting spaces for free, they do ask that we take a collection during our meeting asking for donations to the UUFA. There is no obligation that you provide a donation in order to attend these meetings, and if you choose to donate, there’s no requirement as to the amount. These donations go to cover things like utilities and for their generous agreement to provide us with access to the facility outside of normal hours.
  • We reserve our venues for 1/2 hour before and after the meeting time. You are welcome to come early and stay late to socialize. Your help with set up and break down of the room would also be welcome.
