Join us for a personalized hands-on workshop on landscape design with native plants.  Trecia Neal with Green Gardens Education & Designs, and Wild Roots Native Nursery will help you learn how to add native plants to your landscape, including:

  • Planting and maintaining green infrastructure projects
  • Woody plants and pollinators
  • Wise water uses and the importance of native plants
  • Important hardscape considerations for wildlife gardens
  • Shrubs and small trees in landscape design and ecosystem function
  • Native plant solutions: Perennials for shade, sun and partial shade
  • The importance of native grasses and sedges in a native landscape
  • “Cues of care” and why they are so important
  • Working with “neatniks” to create sustainable native landscapes

Each participant will bring a property survey (plat map) to the workshop.  (Instructions for obtaining the plat will be provided prior to the workshop.)  Using paper that will be provided, you’ll outline one or two areas of the property to focus on.  As a group, we will then discuss the common soil, light and moisture conditions in these areas.  Once these have been identified, you’ll begin drafting a native design plan using a provided list of native trees, shrubs, grasses, ferns and groundcovers.  After the initial draft has been drawn, we will break into small groups based on common planting characteristics, and you’ll present your rough design to the group.  A group facilitator will lead discussions on possible challenges and creative ways to overcome them, as well as alternative plant choices.  At the conclusion, you’ll leave with a rough draft of potential native plantings for your personal landscapes and needs.

Plants from Wild Roots Native Nursery will be available for purchase before and after the workshop.
