Decatur High School Side Garden
Overview
The Decatur High School Side Garden has been operated and maintained by Decatur’s Gardening Club for the last five years. The garden area spans the south side of the school next to our career academy. We cherish this space as it provides an opportunity for students at the school to have an area of nature within a busy downtown. The garden serves over 1800 students and 100 staff. We have planted numerous items here over the years, but currently it is home to a beautyberry bush, black-eyed Susan flowers, butterfly milkweed, and native asters. We plan to continue planting native plants in this area, and our long-term goal is to build a healthy and sustainable native plant garden. In addition, we are a dedicated civic-service club, and one of our priorities is to offer volunteer opportunities to students. We also prioritize education as a school entity, and explore lessons in native plants for both the students at Decatur High School and our attached Early Childhood Center, the Frasier Center.Â

Decatur High School NHS Volunteers
Last week our school's chapter of National Honors Society joined us for a big volunteer day. We were able to put down cardboard to act as a weed barrier and cover the area in mulch to get ready for planting next semester.
Decatur High School now has a GNPS Educational Garden
