Beth and Rick Langhorsts’ wooded property required several years of non-native invasive plant removal. It was then replanted with understory trees of eastern red bud (Cercis canadensis), chalk maple (Acer leucoderme), and more. Also, installed were native shrubs including oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia), mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia), and Virginia sweetspire (Itea virginica). Some of the perennials that were added to the garden were Solomon’s seal (Polygonatum biflorum), Mayapple (Podophyllum peltatum), blue-eyed grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium), and cranefly orchid (Tipularia discolor). The Langhorsts received a silver level habitat certification for their work in rewilding their 1/2 acre lot.
