Boy Scout Road Nursery
Community-Supported Propagation on Georgia’s Fall Line
Boy Scout Road Nursery in Byron, Georgia was established in 2023 by the owner of Juniper Creek Natives in an effort to grow a community-supported propagation program with the Fringed Campion Chapter of GNPS. After two very successful years, operations of Boy Scout Road Nursery (BSRN) were transferred to GNPS to be run similarly to the Stone Mountain Propagation Project. Set on native grassland along Georgia’s Fall Line, volunteers help produce both Piedmont and upper Coastal Plain species.
A dependable source of native plants has been developed and maintained through weekly two-hour workdays. Each year, more than fifty unique volunteers give more than 1,000 hours of time to support this operation. Volunteers have the opportunity to learn about native plants, propagation techniques and land restoration while enjoying the company of like-minded peers and performing a priceless community service.
Propagation manager, Kelley Hanada, oversees the operation in partnership with the land owner. Periodically, workshops and events are held at BSRN with the Fringed Campion Chapter of GNPS.
