Weed Wrangle at Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve

Wrangle with us! Dekalb County and Intown Atlanta Chapter of GNPS are hosting a weed wrangle event on MLK Jr. Day of Service as a part of the statewide Weed Wrangle Georgia! Volunteers will engage in a rewarding morning of invasive plant removal at Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve. Volunteers have two options depending on interest and physical ability:
Option 1: Meadow Restoration: Help restore one of our local meadows by selectively removing invasive vegetation (primarily privet), as well as fast-growing shrubs and trees (e.g. sweetgum and pine) that are outcompeting native grass species. Tasks involve hiking, bushwhacking, and general physical labor.
-
- Physical Demand: High (recommended for teens and above)
- Expectations: Volunteers will need to hike about 1 mile on uneven terrain (guided by Rangers) to reach our meadow site. Volunteers will use hand tools to remove invasive plants and open space for native vegetation.
Option 2: Pollinator Garden Maintenance at the Nature Center: Assist with weeding, mulching, and preparing our Nature Center’s pollinator garden for new plantings. This is an excellent option for those looking for a less physically demanding task, but still want to make an impact for the preserve and its visitors.
-
- Physical Demand: Low (good for all ages)
- Expectations: Volunteers will work with Arabia Rangers to beautify the garden space. Work will involve light-moderate physical activities such as kneeling, bending forward, and carrying tools.
How to Prepare!
- Clothing: Wear long sleeves, sturdy closed-toe shoes, and layers appropriate for the weather.
- Tools: Bring work gloves if you have them; tools will be provided on-site. We can provide work gloves if you do not have your own.
- Water and Snacks: Bring a refillable water bottle and any personal snacks to keep your energy up.
