Cathy Rouse has a sunny front lawn with a perimeter of native forbs, grasses, and vines including giant ironweed (Vernonia gigantea), purple love grass (Eragrostis spectabilis), Stone Mountain daisy (Helianthus porteri), and vasevine (Clematis viorna). The backyard is a great example of the layers in landscaping. The tree canopy consists of pecan (Carya illinoinensis), tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera), and more. Understory trees create the next layer with pawpaw (Asimina triloba), parsley hawthorn (Crataegus mashallii) and others. The shrub layer has smooth hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens), arrowwood viburnum (Viburnum dentatum), and bottlebrush buckeye (Aesculus parviflora). Many ferns and wildflowers make up the ground layer. Two stunning ponds with pickerel weed (Pontederia cordata) and American lotus (Nelumbo lutea) are surrounded by a bog garden with pitcher plants (Sarracenia). Congratulations, Cathy on the Silver Level Award!
