Chapters in Georgia Native Plant Society

History

Over two decades ago, the Georgia Native Plant Society was founded by people based in metro Atlanta.  Since that time, their initiative and message around the importance of native plants to our lives and the ability of individuals to make a difference locally in their protection, stewardship, rescue and propagation, has spread across Georgia and in fact across the USA.  Today our members are served in other locations across the state where local groups are providing educational information, restoration opportunities and opportunities to learn more.

Realignment

In November 2019, GNPS adopted new bylaws, which implemented a state-wide governing board to set organizational policy, define its strategic vision, and directly support chapter activities. This new organizational structure paved the way for more chapters to form throughout Georgia.

Amerson River Park (Macon) Invasive Plant Removal Work Day

Amerson River Park (Macon) Invasive Plant Removal Work Day

Fringed Campion Chapter members and friends will gather at the Amerson River Park in the parking lot near the overlook on Saturday Sept. 23, 2023 from 9 until 11 a.m. to continue the efforts to eradicate invasive plants from the park’s ecosystem.

Wear long sleeves and closed-toe shoes, and bring a water bottle, gloves, and loppers if you got ’em! Participants must be 12 or older, and EVERYONE signs the GNPS waiver before working. An early arrival at the parking lot near the overlook will give everyone a time to sign the waiver and get oriented. Then we’ll get busy cutting privet, English ivy, Chinese tallow, and Bradford pear so that our native species can thrive!

Workday at the Amerson River Park Native Plant Garden

Workday at the Amerson River Park Native Plant Garden

With the hint of fall in the air, now is a perfect time to plant the native azaleas!  Join Fringed Campion members and friends at the Amerson River Park Native Plant Garden & Monarch Waystation for a workday on Saturday morning, Sept. 16, 2023 from 8 until 10 a.m.

The native azaleas were were purchased with funds received from a Georgia Master Gardeners’ Association grant.  Many thanks to the GMGA and to the many master gardener volunteers who give their time and talents to the habit.

Dress for garden work (long pants, long sleeves, gloves, hat, boots), bring a water bottle and hand tools. We’ll also have a few new plants to pop into the ground!

Participants must be 12 years or older, and all participants must sign the GNPS waiver of liability before digging in.

Native Plant Sale at the Wesleyan Market Oct. 14

Native Plant Sale at the Wesleyan Market Oct. 14

The chapter will return to the Wesleyan Market on Oct. 14 from 9 am until 1 pm for it’s fall native plant sale.

Help us get native plants into neighbors’ yards!  If you have extra native plants that you have been propagating or native perennials in your yard that need to be divided, the plant sale committee would be delighted to take them off your hands.  Also, volunteers are needed the day of the sale to set up the booth, share native plant info with shoppers, and to help pack up and clean up after the sale.  A sign up form for both to offer donations and to volunteer can be found here: https://forms.gle/AdwByPHVhqLDot256

The spring and fall native plant sales are the chapter’s largest fundraisers.  Money generated from the sale of member donated plants is used for chapter projects including the Amerson River Park Native Plant Garden & Monarch Waystation, the native plant garden at the Centerville Branch of the Houston County Library System, tools for volunteers to use at invasive plant removal workdays, printing of educational handouts, and much more.

We hope to see you at the sale!
